OpenAI is launching a grant program aimed at encouraging innovative approaches to governing AI. The company will offer 10 grants of $100,000 each from a $1M fund for experiments that answer policy questions about AI. The grants will go to individuals, teams, and organizations that offer proofs-of-concept for democratic processes and frameworks to govern AI.

  • The deadline for applications is June 24. Chosen recipients will receive $100,000 to launch their proofs-of-concept among at least 500 participants.
  • While the findings from the experiments won't be binding, they're expected to contribute to discussions on AI governance.
  • Recipients are required to share a public report on their findings by Oct. 20.
  • Their study results must be freely accessible, and any code or IP must be made available to the public under an open-source license.
