Amazon exec: "Citadel" needs time

Speaking at a Canadian media festival, Amazon Studios' head of drama series Odetta Watkins said the costly Prime Video spy thriller series "Citadel" needs "time to grow" with "very jaded" US audiences.

"Citadel" Season 1 cost around $185 million to produce, but the show has yet to crack the Nielsen Top 10 streaming charts after three weeks online.

The series -- from "Avengers: Endgame" duo Joe and Anthony Russo -- has already been renewed for a second season, and has multiple international spinoffs on the way.

  • When asked about the show's sluggish performance so far in the US, Watkins said "for me, it's a victory, because the show was conceived to be able to speak to the world."
  • She added that "as the franchise grows, I feel like the numbers will grow all over, including domestically."
  • Amazon has prioritized international marketing for the series; Italian and Indian spinoffs are currently in production.
