AMD unveils new AI chip

AMD introduced the MI300x, its cutting-edge GPU designed for AI tasks.

The generative AI accelerator will be AMD's flagship offering for large AI, competing against market leader Nvidia's offerings.

MI300x, with 192 gigabytes of memory, excels in supporting AI applications such as large language models (LLMs).

  • Customers will get sample chips in Q3, with production ramping up in Q4 2023.
  • CEO Lisa Su said the company believes the data center AI accelerator market will grow from around $30B this year to over $150B in 2027.
  • AMD said it has also begun shipping large quantities of its general-purpose central processor chip, "Bergamo," to companies like Meta Platforms.

AMD, like many chip industry players, is in a race to meet the soaring demand for AI computing.

  • Nvidia currently dominates the AI computing market with 80%-95% market share, as reported by analysts.
  • In late May, Nvidia's market cap briefly reached $1T after announcing impressive revenue amid booming demand for its AI chips.
  • AMD's accelerator could squeeze Nvidia's GPU prices, particularly the H100 model, which can cost $30,000 or more. Lower GPU prices could alleviate some of the high costs associated with serving generative AI applications.
