Market Conditions: EV sales in Germany

What the numbers say: Battery electric passenger car sales in Germany rose by 47% YoY to 42,780 units in May. Plug-in vehicles (including PHEVs) reached 56,583, comprising an 8% YoY increase.

Relevance: BEVs increased their market share in Germany to 17.3%, versus 5.6% for plug-in hybrids. However, the country observed a year-to-date decline in total vehicle sales, impacting plug-in passenger cars by a decrease of 7% YoY to 230,000.

Brands that should care: Year-to-date, Tesla leads BEV sales in Germany with 28,340 units, ahead of Volkswagen. When adding plug-in hybrids, VW reached 29,478 unit sales and Mercedes-Benz 28,541. There is a clear drop-off between these three companies and the next 12, which include Audi with 18,113 (6,277 PHEVs) and BMW with 17,458 unit sales (7,485 PHEVs) — fewer than sales of the Tesla Model Y (21,727).
