Women most likely to pick up podcasts now

What the numbers say: Women are more likely to be newer podcast listeners than men. Sixty percent of Podcast Newcomers, which signifies people who have started listening to podcasts weekly over the past year, are women. Podcast Intermediates are listeners who have listened to podcasts for two to three years, and Podcast Pioneers have been listening to podcasts for four-plus years. Both Podcast Intermediates and Podcast Pioneers skewed more toward men.

Relevance: Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights released their Podcast Download — Spring 2023 Report with a large number of findings on podcast listening trends. They surveyed 608 respondents ages 18 and older, who all said they listened to at least one hour of podcasts in the past week. It found that women have begun to listen to podcasts more frequently over the past year, while men have been listening for longer.

More data: The data also shows that Podcast Pioneers are more likely to listen to more shows per week, averaging 5.6 shows per week. Podcast Intermediates average 5.3 shows per week, and Podcast Newcomers listen to 4.2. Heavy consumers, which include listeners who listen to six-plus hours per week of podcasts, average 7.5 shows per week.
