YouTube shifts "election fraud" policy

YouTube announced plans to stop deleting videos that make false claims about fraud in the 2020 US presidential election.

The policy was put it place shortly after the 2020 election; to date, the company has deleted tens of thousands of videos making unsubstantiated or inaccurate claims about election fraud.

The new policy went into effect on June 2.

  • In a statement, the Google-owned platform said that, while the policy had managed to "curb some misinformation," it also had the "unintended effect of curtailing political speech."
  • The company neither indicated what triggered the policy change or how it plans to combat misinformation ahead of the 2024 US presidential election.
  • YouTube will continue to remove videos with some forms of election misinformation, such as clips with inaccurate instructions for where and how to vote.
