Clarkson, a California law firm, has filed a class-action lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of infringing upon copyrights and violating privacy by using scraped data from the web to train ChatGPT.

The lawsuit, first reported by The Washington Post, was submitted today in federal court in the northern district of California.

The lawsuit tests the theory that OpenAI violated the rights of millions of internet users by using their content without permission.

  • Clarkson managing partner Ryan Clarkson said the firm seeks to represent "real people whose information was stolen and commercially misappropriated to create this very powerful technology."
  • He aims to establish court-mandated regulations for AI algorithm training and fair compensation for individuals whose data is utilized.
  • The law firm currently has plaintiffs and is actively seeking additional ones.
