Major U.S. AI companies, such as Google and OpenAI, have pledged to follow voluntary AI safeguards endorsed by the White House.

The firms have agreed to eight measures, including third-party model testing, cybersecurity investments, and virtual watermarks to distinguish real from AI-created content.

The companies — Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI — pledged to new safety, security, and trust standards during a meeting with President Biden on Friday.

  • Under the measures, the companies will subject their AI systems to independent testing and invite third parties to assess them for security flaws.
  • They've committed to watermarking visual and audio content generated by AI, ensuring users can identify things like deepfakes, AI music, etc.

The voluntary measures are considered an immediate step while Congress considers long-term AI regulations.

  • The White House is also working on an executive order for AI and supporting bipartisan legislation to regulate AI.
  • On the congressional side, lawmakers are said to be considering a bill that would require political campaigns and groups to reveal their use of AI-generated imagery in political ads.
