The White House has scheduled its first-ever classified briefing on AI for U.S. senators on Tuesday.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and others organized the senators-only briefing covering national security and AI, along with two additional meetings covering various AI topics.

The closed session, taking place in the Capitol's sensitive compartmented information facility (SCIF), will cover how the Pentagon and broader intelligence community use AI today and how U.S. adversaries are employing AI.

  • It will feature briefings by Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Arati Prabhakar, and other officials.

The briefing is part of Schumer's broader efforts to develop a regulatory framework for AI and pursue bipartisan talks.

  • In a letter addressed to colleagues, Schumer and other lawmakers said the Senate needs to deepen its expertise on AI, which is "already changing our world."
  • In June, he introduced his "SAFE Innovation framework" for developing comprehensive AI legislation, outlining ways to "protect, expand, and harness AI's potential."
  • The framework, which stands for "security, accountability, foundations, and explain," aims to prevent potentially catastrophic damage while ensuring that the U.S. remains a leader in AI technology.
