What happened: Google is now testing its Med-PaLM 2 AI chat technology

What happened: Google is now testing its Med-PaLM 2 AI chat technology at hospitals like Mayo Clinic. While still in the early stages, the AI tool can answer medical questions and offer healthcare assistance.

Details: Med-PaLM 2 is trained on medical expert demonstrations and licensing exam materials. The LLM is based on an updated version of Google's PaLM 2 language model, which also powers the company's Bard chatbot.

Why it matters: The new tool can assist doctors with diagnoses and healthcare tasks, including document summarization and data organization. Google believes Med-PaLM 2 can help in regions with limited access to doctors. In a study, Med-PaLM and Med-PaLM 2 had more inaccuracies than other doctors but still performed similarly in other areas, including reasoning and comprehension accuracy.

By the numbers: While the global healthcare chatbots market is expected to top $944M by 2032, many people are wary of incorporating AI into their medical care. According to a Pew Research Center survey, 60% of U.S. adults would feel uncomfortable if their healthcare provider relied on AI for tasks such as diagnosing diseases and recommending treatments, while only 39% would feel comfortable. Around 38% believe that using AI for tasks such as diagnosing diseases and suggesting treatments would result in improved health outcomes for patients, while 33% believe it would lead to worse outcomes.
