Toyota confirmed its plans to build a lunar rover powered by regenerative fuel cells

The automaker has been working on the Lunar Cruiser with JAXA, aiming at having the vehicle on the moon by 2029.

Toyota plans for the vehicle to be powered by creating hydrogen from solar energy and water during the daylight hours so that the rover would operate at night.

  • The plan is for the vehicle to operate through a lunar night, which lasts 14 Earth days, through the dark and extreme cold.
  • Toyota plans for the rover to have an initial lifespan of 10 years, with further operations depending on companies being able to supply water to produce hydrogen.
