French wine and spirits exports reached new high

Wine and spirits exports from France set a new record in 2022, reaching 17.2B euros ($18.42B), the Federation of French Wine and Spirits Exporters (FEVS) reports.

The sales of French wines and spirits, France's second-biggest export after aerospace goods, rose 11% in 2022, primarily due to higher prices.

  • Exports to the U.S., France's largest market for wine and spirits, jumped 14% to 4.7B euros and now account for over a fourth of total exports in value.
    • According to Cesar Giron, FEVS Chairman, the U.S. "confirmed its role as the driving force behind French wine and spirits exports."
  • Britain, France's second-largest export market, saw its value rise 7% to 1.7B euros (~$1.8B)
  • Champagne exports increased 8.5% in volume and 20% in value, setting a record for 2022.
  • The war in Ukraine reportedly impacted the market indirectly by increasing energy prices and grain prices for vodka production.
