The U.S. Copyright Office has withdrawn copyright registration for AI-created images used in a comic book, according to a letter viewed by Reuters.
The graphic novel "Zarya of the Dawn" was created by artist Kris Kashtanova, who wrote the story text and used the text-to-image engine Midjourney to create the artwork.
After initially granting copyright status to the full book, the Copyright Office has now revoked the protection for the AI-generated images.
- The book's text and the whole work itself remain eligible for copyright registration, according to Bloomberg Law.
- The Office says it will reissue registration to exclude images that were not created by a human.
- On Wednesday, Kashtanova said it was "great news" that the story and image arrangement had retained the copyright status, telling Reuters that it "covers a lot of uses for the people in the AI art community."
