U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Chief Information Officer (CIO) John Sherman will soon issue new guidance on the Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC) contract.
The updated guidance aims to optimize costs and enable the best mission outcome.
- The JWCC deal is worth ~$9B and is a way for the U.S. Military to process and share information through Joint All-Domain Command and Control, which encompasses land, air, space, sea, and cyber forces.
- Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, Google Cloud, and Oracle have been selected as the cloud infrastructure providers for this deal.
- Sherman highlighted that his goal is to ensure that the Pentagon leverages JWCC and has a strong say in “what must go in there and where are some other areas that could have some flexibility.”
- Cost optimization is another major area of focus for Sherman, who asserted that cloud procurement must be done in a smart way to avoid issues like data exfiltration fees.
- The four JWCC cloud providers must complete a series of tasks by June 8, 2028, to prove their capabilities in terms of data classification.
