GLAAD released the 18th edition of their "Where We Are on TV" report, about LGBTQ representation on television in the previous year.
The
group found that overall representation of gay people and relationships
was down, but racial diversity among depicted members of the LGBTQ
community had increased to more than 50%.
- The
survey is based on regular and recurring characters appearing on
scripted primetime broadcast, cable, and streaming series between June
1, 2022 and May 31, 2023.
- GLAAD found 141 LGBTQ characters on broadcast, 139 on cable, and 356 on streaming services.
- The
streaming services included in the survey were Apple TV+, Amazon Prime
Video, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Peacock, and Paramount+.
- The
group expects these numbers to dip next year, as several shows
featuring LGBTQ characters have been canceled or are in the midst of
their final seasons.
- The percentage of bisexual characters had
also sharply dipped this year, from 29% last season to just 25% in 2022;
there were additionally eight asexual TV characters this year, on shows
including "Chucky," "Big Mouth," and "The Umbrella Academy."
