According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon Studios continues struggling to define itself, despite releasing several high-profile, mega-budget shows and films.
Huge investments in event series like "Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" and "Daisy Jones & The Six" have yet to fully pay off for the streamer.
- THR reports,
based on information from unnamed sources, that "The Rings of Power"
only had a 37% completion rate among viewers in the US, well below
comparable event series on other platforms; overseas, the show only hit
around a 45% completion rate.
- Nonetheless, Amazon Studios chief
Jennifer Salke has described the show as a success and a "culturally
defining moment" for the company.
- "Daisy Jones" also has had
some impact -- renewing interest in the novel upon which it's based, and
launching a soundtrack album featuring songs from its fictional band --
but THR reports it also produced disappointing viewership numbers based on its $140 million budget.
- On
April 28, Amazon debuts "Citadel," a very costly series from producers
Anthony and Joe Russo ("Avengers: Endgame"); Amazon has committed to
produce at least three seasons of the globe-trotting series.
- The
streamer also has several costly collaborations in the pipeline with
"Westworld" creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, including a second
season of the sci-fi drama "The Peripheral" and the video game
adaptation "Fallout."
