US trains Ukraine on tanks

The 31 M1 Abrams tanks that the U.S. has offered Ukraine are slated to be delivered by the fall, earlier than first anticipated.

Over the next few weeks, Ukrainian troops will start taking a 10-week training program to learn how to operate the tanks at an air base in Germany, said U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

  • The tanks "will put Ukraine’s forces in position to succeed on the battlefield," Austin told a news conference.
  • They are meant to help with the defense of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.
  • Several NATO countries have pushed back delivery timelines for weapons and ammunition they have promised to Ukraine.
