BBC Docs chief on "Harry & Meghan"

During a press event to discuss the UK's Sheffield Doc Fest, BBC's head of commissioning documentaries -- Clare Sillery -- discussed Netflix's controversial "Harry & Meghan" series.

Sillery said the show could not have aired on the BBC, or any other public broadcaster, because producers had relinquished editorial control to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Sillery described commissioning documentaries for the BBC as a "question of trust," as the public "expects us to maintain... editorial standards."

  • "Harry & Meghan" was jointly produced by the couple's own company, Archewell Productions, which has an overall deal with Netflix.
  • Other recent Netflix documentaries have taken similar approaches; a recent film about Pamela Anderson was produced by her son, Brandon Thomas Lee.
