Prime Video with ads

According to a new report in The Wall Street Journal, Amazon is planning to add a lower-cost ad-supported tier to the Prime Video service.

The plans apparently remain in the early stages, with nothing yet set in stone.

One option Amazon is reportedly considering would move all current Prime Video subscribers onto an ad-supported plan, then give them the option to pay more and remove ads.

  • Amazon declined to comment on the WSJ report.
  • Currently, Prime Video is available as a standalone subscription -- without Amazon Prime shipping -- for $8.99 per month; a full Amazon Prime membership runs $14.99/month.
  • Amazon already has a number of ad-supported video options, including Thursday Night Football streams, the Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) service, and the Fire TV Channels platform.
