Apple's Vision Pro headset is expected to have a slow ramp-up, with a longer timeline to reach the revenue success of previous Apple products like the iPhone and iPad.

The Vision Pro headset, launching in early 2024 at a much higher price point, is expected to have limited initial availability in the US and a slower international expansion.

The iPod, iPhone, and iPad quickly became significant contributors to Apple's revenue, with the iPod generating about 16% of sales in 2004 and the iPad making nearly $20B in revenue by 2011.

  • The Apple Watch started slower but has become an important part of the business, contributing to the Wearables, Home, and Accessories segment that brings in about $40B annually.
  • Apple plans to require appointments for in-store purchases, localize the product for international markets, and slowly roll out new Vision Pro experience areas in retail stores.
  • The challenges for the Vision Pro include its weight, limited use cases, the need for an external battery, and convincing consumers to wear a computer on their faces.

The Financial Times reported that Apple has significantly cut its Apple Vision Pro unit shipments targets: down from an expected million units per year, Apple will now only make around 400,000 Vision Pro headsets in 2024.
